About Polebridge, Montana

Polebridge is a community of 14 people in Flathead County, about 22 miles south of the Canadian border on the North Fork Flathead River. The search for coal, oil and minerals first drew settlers to the North Fork valley, and homesteaders reached the Polebridge area in the 1890s. In 1910 the valley land east of the river became Glacier National Park, which closed it to settlement, so later newcomers took up land outside the park instead.

One of them, William L. "Bill" Adair, claimed 160 acres under the Homestead Acts. He built a cabin in 1912 and opened a general store, the Polebridge Mercantile, in 1914. The community got its name in 1920 from the log bridge over the river, which joined the North Fork road inside the park to the road on the outer side.

“Originally, the Polebridge Store served as a communications and social center, and as the only local supplier of goods for the North Fork region.”
National Register nomination, 1985
  • The Merc since 1914Adair's store was the only general store in a valley of some 900 square miles, so homesteaders from all over the North Fork gathered there for supplies and news. A log ice house went up beside it in 1914, a log barn in 1917 and a frame machine shed in 1925. The post office had moved around the valley under a string of contracts, but Polebridge won one back in 1934, and the store handled the mail until 2001.
  • Nominated by its neighborsAdair's 1912 cabin later became the Northern Lights Saloon. Its owner at the time, Karen Feather, teamed up with Jerry DeSanto, the National Park Service's Polebridge Sub-District Ranger, to write the nomination form. Their work put the store, cabin and outbuildings on the National Register as the W. L. Adair General Mercantile Historic District.
  • The Red Bench Fire of 1988On September 7, 1988, the Red Bench Fire swept toward Polebridge and nearly wiped it out. It burned 25 homes, the Polebridge Ranger Station, many barns and outbuildings, and the old pole bridge that gave the community its name. The Mercantile survived, and it still opens every year from May through October.
  • Life off the gridPolebridge residents live without electricity, and mail and newspapers are their only links to the outside world. Just under 100 people stay here from May through October, but in the colder months the count drops to single digits.
