About Martin City, Montana
Martin City is a community of 461 people in Flathead County, on the east side of the Flathead River. It grew up on the homestead that Gaspard Martin had claimed near Abbott Creek, and it filled with newcomers once the federal government planned a big dam on the river's South Fork.
- Born of the Hungry Horse DamIn 1947 the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation was pushing the bill to fund the Hungry Horse Dam through Congress. People crowded into Martin City ahead of the boom they expected, and when crews built the dam on the South Fork in the early 1950s, the town had them to thank for its start.
- A tourist town todayWith the dam long finished, Martin City carries on as a tourist town. Travelers heading from Columbia Falls to Glacier National Park pass through it, and the Hungry Horse Dam that brought the town to life still stands nearby.
