About Hungry Horse, Montana

Hungry Horse is a community of 828 people in Flathead County, Montana, and it exists because of a dam. In 1944 Congress authorized the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to build Hungry Horse Dam on the South Fork of the Flathead River. Workers needed homes close to the job, so the Bureau brought in prefabricated buildings, and by 1948 more than 100 of them stood at the site.

The town sits where the South Fork flows into the Flathead River, and the dam and its reservoir lie about 4 miles up the South Fork valley. Bad Rock Canyon opens less than a mile to the west, and U.S. Route 2 runs through town, 10 miles from West Glacier and 23 miles from Kalispell.

  • Tex and Jerry, winter 1900-01The name goes back to two freight horses, Tex and Jerry, that hauled for loggers in the South Fork country. During the hard winter of 1900-01 they wandered off from their logging sled, and in local legend they nearly starved in the deep snow along the river. The dam took its name from their story, and the town later took it from the dam.
  • From Damtown to Hungry HorseThe workers' camp was first known as Damtown. In 1948 the Flathead County commissioners renamed it Hungry Horse, giving the new settlement the same name as the dam its people had come to build.
