About West Glacier, Montana
The Great Northern Railway reached the northern Rockies in 1890. It built a station called Belton at this spot, and a small town slowly grew around it. Belton got its post office in 1900. In 1949 the town renamed itself West Glacier to draw more tourists.
The Swiss-style Belton Chalet opened in 1910 as the first Great Northern hotel at Glacier National Park. Train travelers stayed here before heading to the park's back-country camps. In the Great Depression it housed the crews building the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Today it is a National Historic Landmark.
