About Stuart, Florida

Stuart is a city of 17,425 people and the seat of Martin County, beside the St. Lucie River and a short way from the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Its first non-Native settlers arrived in 1870. Otto Stypmann, a landowner from Potsdam, Germany, owned the future downtown with his brother Ernest, and from 1893 to 1895 the settlement carried the name of his hometown.

Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway linked the area to Daytona Beach in 1892 and to Miami in 1896. In 1895 Potsdam took a new name, Stuart, honoring Homer Hine "Jack" Stuart Jr., who held 160 acres around the depot. The town incorporated in 1914, while it still belonged to Palm Beach County. When the new Martin County was formed in 1925, Stuart received a city charter and became its county seat.

  • Sailfish Capital since 1957In 1957, after pressure from the Stuart Chamber of Commerce, the city made "Sailfish Capital of the World" its official motto, because so many sailfish swim off the Martin County coast. Stuart still uses those words, and many local fishing guides specialize in the fish.
  • Katharine Hepburn at the LyricThe Lyric Theatre opened on Flagler Avenue in 1926 as a movie house. Katharine Hepburn took its stage in 1941, and the theater was listed on the National Register in 1993.
  • The pirate of Gilbert's BarIn 1832 the pirate Pedro Gilbert, who used an offshore sandbar to trap passing ships, chased down the Mexican, a U.S. merchant ship. He tried to burn it and kill its crew, but the sailors lived to report him, and Gilbert and his men were caught and executed. Nautical charts still call the sandbar Gilbert's Bar.
  • Trains until 1968Florida East Coast Railway trains between Jacksonville and Miami stopped in Stuart until 1968, and until 1963 long-distance trains such as the City of Miami and the South Wind came through from Chicago. On March 4, 2024, Brightline announced it would build a Treasure Coast station in Stuart, planned to open by 2028.
