About Port Salerno, Florida

Port Salerno is a community of 10,401 people in Martin County, on the south side of the St. Lucie River where it meets the Indian River Lagoon. Fishermen settled here in the 1920s along the Manatee Pocket, a small bay off the river, and the place was called Salerno because the view reminded one early visitor of the Italian city.

Some of those fishing families never left, and a few have held the same ground for more than 100 years. Newcomers from the Northeast poured into Florida after World War II, and the village grew along with them. In 1960 it added the word Port to its name, so that no one would confuse it with Salerno in Italy.

  • A grocery turned saloonPart of the 1967 film Gentle Giant was shot in and around Port Salerno. At the time the town had one grocery, P.O. Smith's, a small wooden store at the corner of Snake Road, since renamed Salerno Road, and Route A1A. Its swinging doors already looked like a saloon's, so the film crew dressed the whole store up as one.
  • The Manatee ResortDuring the 1970s the old Manatee Hotel was bought by Michael Reynolds, an heir in line for a share of the money his family made from R. J. Reynolds tobacco, and he reopened it as the Manatee Resort. The actress Sally Field brought up both the town and the resort while talking with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
  • World Fishing TournamentsThe fishing that drew the first settlers still defines the place. The yacht port hosts the World Fishing Tournaments that made the town's name, and many of its streets carry fish names, among them Kingfish, Flounder and Grouper avenues and Cobia Terrace. In the 1980s Indian River State College opened its Chastain Campus here.
  • Two tornadoes in one dayOn October 9, 2024, Hurricane Milton spun off two tornadoes that struck Port Salerno less than two hours apart. The first was rated EF1 and the second EF2, and both left damage across the community.
