About Hobe Sound, Florida
Hobe Sound is a community of 13,163 people in Martin County, on Florida's Treasure Coast. Its name comes from a Jaega village that stood here before Europeans arrived. Spanish records wrote that name as Jove or Jobe. In 1696 a Quaker merchant named Jonathan Dickinson was shipwrecked nearby, and in the journal of his trip north to St. Augustine he spelled it Hoe-bey.
In 1815 Spain gave Don Eusebio a grant of 12,000 acres that took in part of the area, and in 1821 Gomez sold 8,000 acres, Jupiter Island among them, to Joseph Delespine at a dollar an acre. Hobe Sound got its post office in 1891. Early in the 20th century Henry Flagler's railroad reached the community, and over the years it brought work, the first tourists and new businesses.
- Picture City in the 1920sDuring Florida's land boom of the 1920s, New Yorkers Lewis J. Selznick and Joseph Schenck picked Hobe Sound for Picture City, a planned moviemaking center. Its townsite, Olympia, was laid out for 585 Greek-style buildings on streets named Athena, Venus, Mars, Zeus, Pluto, Saturn, Olympus and Mercury. The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane ended the boom, and the town took back its old name. The street names survive, and so do the cement streetlights on Dixie Highway.
- The Olympia School of 1925The two-room schoolhouse at 9141 Southeast Apollo Street went up in 1924. The Martin County Board of Public Instruction got the use of it from the Picture City Corporation and opened it as the Olympia School in October 1925. Children studied there until 1962. The Mission Revival building, which later went by Picture City School and then Apollo Street School, joined the National Register in 2002.
- Trains until 1963Hobe Sound was a stop for long-distance trains until 1963, among them the South Wind, the Havana Special, the City of Miami and the East Coast Champion, and local trains running between Jacksonville and Miami kept stopping until 1968. The old station was restored and moved west of town, where it now holds an office for Becker Groves.
- A turtle refuge in 1969In 1969 the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge was set aside on Jupiter Island and part of the mainland to protect loggerhead and green sea turtles. Since 2019 its official name has honored Nathaniel P. Reed.
