About Sugar Island, Michigan

Sugar Island is a township of 653 people in Chippewa County, at the eastern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The whole township is a single island in the St. Marys River, which forms the line between the United States and Ontario. The island was caught up in the long fight over where that border should run, and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, signed on August 9, 1842, confirmed it as American ground.

The island holds 49 square miles of land between Lake George and Lake Nicolet, with Neebish Island and St. Joseph Island to its south. Much of it is still undeveloped. Drivers cross on a ferry at the northwestern tip, which connects to the mainland just east of Sault Ste. Marie.

  • A governor's islandChase Osborn, governor of Michigan from 1911 to 1913, made his home on Sugar Island. Near the island's southern tip, a 3,200-acre tract now bears his name as the Chase Osborn Preserve, and the University of Michigan Biological Station runs it.
  • Ojibwe ancestral homelandThe Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians counts Sugar Island as part of the land of its ancestors. Both the Sault Tribe and the Bay Mills Indian Community hold interests on the island today.
  • A township by 1860In 1860, Sugar Island Township counted 51 Indians and 307 whites. William Wilson was elected the township's supervisor in 1862 and served in that seat until 1867. The next count, ten years after 1860, found 76 Indians and 162 whites.
