About Summit, Waukesha County, Wisconsin

Summit is a village of 4,784 people in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Andrew Baxter settled here in the spring of 1837, when the land still belonged to Milwaukee County. A year later Curtis Reed became the first postmaster, and by 1840 about 335 settlers had taken up land across the town's 36 square miles.

Those settlers held their first town meeting on April 5, 1842, and chose Ralph Frisbie as town clerk, with Reed serving as the first town chairman. Summit remained a town for well over a century and a half, until it became a village on July 29, 2010. The older settlements of Summit Center, Summit Corners and Waterville now lie within the village.

“The first cheese factory, for making cheese alone, was built in Summit by Mann & Dousman in 1870.”
History of Waukesha County, 1880
  • A mission church in 1842Summit's first church building went up in 1842 at Nashotah Mission. After the mission moved to Delafield, St. Mary's Church, at highways 67 and 18, became the oldest church still holding services in the town. It dates to 1871.
  • A census in 1875By 1875 the town had grown well past its first 335 settlers, and that year's census counted 619 males and 540 females. Eight years later, in 1883, Native Americans were seen in the area for the last time.
  • Town halls of 1906 and 2018Summit built its first town hall in 1906. That building came down in 1954, and a new hall took its place. In April 2018 the village moved its offices into a new building at 37100 Delafield Road, a short way south of the old site.
  • Gustave Pabst's VentnorGustave Pabst, a prominent Milwaukee businessman, bought land in Summit next to the Frederick Pabst Estate. There he built Ventnor, a mansion of 40,000 square feet.
