About Dousman, Wisconsin

Dousman is a village of 2,419 people in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. A post office by that name has served the area since 1856. The village was founded in 1881 and named for Talbot C. Dousman, a farmer and businessman who had worked to bring the Chicago and North Western railroad through this part of the county. Residents incorporated Dousman as a village in 1917 and chose Nick Mundschau as their first village president.

  • Once Bullfrog StationBullfrogs were so plentiful here that the stop was once known as Bullfrog Station. The old name never quite went away. The local baseball team still plays as the Dousman Frogs, and Derby Days, held every year, includes a frog jumping contest.
  • Talbot Dousman's county workTalbot C. Dousman, the village's namesake, was one of the sixteen supervisors on Waukesha County's first County Board, the group that organized the new county. The board named him, S. S. Case and Curtis Reed to a committee to obtain plans for a court house and oversee its construction. In January 1847 the board gave the same committee the job of contracting for a jail and a jailer's house.
  • A trail on the old railroadOnce the trains quit running, the land where the Chicago & North Western tracks had been laid was turned into the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. People hike, bike and snowmobile along its 47 miles, which run east and west between Cottage Grove and Waukesha. The trail cuts straight through the middle of Dousman, following the line that Talbot Dousman helped bring to the area.
