About the City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
Sun Prairie is a city of 35,967 people in Dane County, just northeast of Madison. Its name dates to 1837, when President Martin Van Buren sent a crew of 45 men, Augustus A. Bird among them, to build a capitol for the Territory of Wisconsin at Madison. They set out from Milwaukee on May 26 and slogged through days of rain. On June 9 they came out onto this prairie just as the sun broke through, so they carved "Sun Prairie" into the bark of a tree to mark the moment.
After two years, Charles Bird returned to make his home here, and no one had settled the spot before him. The Town of Sun Prairie was formed on February 2, 1846, and the village that grew inside it was incorporated by the Wisconsin legislature on March 6, 1868. In a referendum on May 6, 1958, voters chose to become a city by just 295 to 284, and the state filed the city's certificate of incorporation on May 15, 1958.
“In the year 1844, William H. Angell purchased five acres of land from Mr. Bird, being the first lot of ground sold in the present village of Sun Prairie.”
- Groundhog Capital of the WorldThe Congressional Record gave Sun Prairie that title in 1955, and Jimmy the Groundhog is the star of every February 2. At the 2015 celebration, Jimmy bit Mayor Jonathan Freund on the ear, and the next day the mayor issued a proclamation pardoning him. State and federal officials then ruled that wild animals could not be captured for show, so the 2016 celebration used a caged groundhog bought for $1,200.
- Sun Prairie StrongOn July 10, 2018, a gas explosion flattened a downtown block. It wiped out a bar and a pizza place and harmed the old city hall and several other buildings nearby. Fire Captain Cory Barr, who owned the bar, was hurt in the blast and died soon after. Residents and businesses raised money for his family and the damaged shops, and the slogan "Sun Prairie Strong" came out of those days.
- A 1912 water towerFrank Stegerwald designed the Sun Prairie Water Tower, built in 1912 of stone, metal and wood where Columbus, Church and Cliff Streets meet. Nearby, the Fuhremann Canning Company Factory canned food from 1900 to 1974 and now houses The Nitty Gritty Restaurant. Both are on the National Register.
- The Sweet Corn FestivalEvery August the city holds a weekend Sweet Corn Festival, serving or selling more than 70 short tons of corn. There's a carnival, local and regional bands play, and a parade marches down Main Street.
