About Windsor, Wisconsin
Windsor is a village of 8,754 people in Dane County, on the county's northern line. Travelers came through the area in the late 1830s, but the first person to settle here was William Lawrence, who arrived from Vermont in 1841 and later fought in the Civil War. James Morrison followed in 1843, and the place where he made his home is now Morrisonville.
When the town was first organized, it also took in the land that later became Vienna, Burke and Westport. Its first town meeting was held in 1847 at the house of Horace Lawrence, and Charles M. Nichols became its first supervisor. Windsor stayed a town until November 3, 2015, when residents voted to incorporate it as a village.
- Three stops on one railroadThe Madison and Portage railroad crossed Windsor from section 32 on its southern edge to section 6 on the north. Along the way it had three stations, each with a post office: De Forest on section 17, Morrison on section 6 and Windsor on section 29, where a few stores and mechanical shops grew up. In 1870 the town counted 1,256 people.
- Prairie and oak openingsEarly Windsor was a mix of prairie and oak openings, drained by small streams running to the Catfish and, in the southeast corner, by Token Creek. Farmers found the ground well suited to corn, wheat and other grains. Token Creek, Lake Windsor and Morrisonville are all communities inside the village today.
- A deal with DeForest in 2004The Village of DeForest tried to annex part of the old town, and the two sides fought over the land. In July 2004 they settled: DeForest took part of the disputed area, the rest stayed with Windsor, and the two also traded other, less populated land.
