About Sun Valley, Nevada
Sun Valley is a community of 21,178 people in Washoe County, part of the Reno-Sparks area and about three miles north of Reno. The valley covers 14.9 square miles of land along Nevada State Route 443, and it grew into a place to live because of a federal land law passed in 1938.
- Free land in 1938In 1938 the federal government passed the Small Tract Act to bring more settlers to the West. Under it, a person could claim a 5-acre parcel at no cost, so long as they made it their permanent home. Settlers took up that offer in the valley north of Reno.
- Hundreds of tracts by the 1950sBy the 1950s, people had settled hundreds of these small tracts. Then a new kind of house, the mobile home, began arriving in large numbers, and the scattered homesteads quickly filled in and became the busy community of Sun Valley.
- A place to huntHunters made regular trips to Sun Valley. They came looking for sage hen, chukar, quail and cottontail rabbits.
