About Sunset, Montague County, Texas

Sunset is a community of 543 people in Montague County, about 9 miles southeast of Bowie. Sam Smith ran a grocery store here in the 1870s, and in 1880 he applied for a post office that he hoped to call Smithville. Another town already had that name, so postal officials proposed Sunset instead, and the town took it.

For its first decades Sunset was counted as part of Wise County because surveyors had drawn the line in the wrong place. A lawsuit settled the question in 1900, when the court awarded the land under the town to Montague County.

  • On the Fort Worth and DenverThe Fort Worth and Denver Railway's tracks run through Sunset, passing right through the middle of the community.
  • A city until 2007Sunset was once an incorporated city, with 339 people at the 2000 census. It dissolved its city government on April 19, 2007, and became an unincorporated community again. Its children attend schools in the Bowie Independent School District.
  • The wildfires of April 2009On April 9, 2009, residents left Sunset as wildfires closed in on the town. The flames burned through in a patchwork, skipping some places and destroying many homes and businesses in others.
