About SUNY Oswego, New York

SUNY Oswego is a census-designated place of 3,451 people in Oswego County, covering much of the State University of New York at Oswego campus. The school began in 1861, when Edward Austin Sheldon opened the Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School in the city of Oswego to prepare teachers for the classroom. His fresh ideas about how children learn came to be called the Oswego Movement in American education, and he led the school until 1897.

By 1913 it was known as the Oswego Normal School, and that year it left the city for a new home beside Lake Ontario. A state law in 1942 turned the normal school into Oswego State Teachers College, which could grant degrees. In 1948 the college was one of the charter members of the new State University of New York, and in 1962 it widened its mission to become a liberal arts college.

  • A campus on Lake OntarioThe architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill planned the lakeshore campus and designed its major buildings. Tyler Hall, Culkin Hall, Penfield Library, Lanigan Hall, Mahar Hall, Hewitt Hall and Laker Hall all went up in the Brutalist style, dating to the early 1970s. Today the campus spreads over 690 acres and holds 46 buildings.
  • Penfield Library, opened 1968The library takes its name from Lida S. Penfield, who once chaired the English department. Its 160,000-square-foot building opened in 1968 and took over from an earlier Penfield Library, which had been housed in the building now called Rich Hall. It keeps the Millard Fillmore and Marshall Family Papers and the papers of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter, known as Safe Haven.
  • Bagels, then a 2007 titleIn the 1990s and early 2000s, Oswego hockey fans tossed bagels onto the ice whenever the Lakers scored on Plattsburgh, answering the tennis balls Plattsburgh fans threw at Oswego. The custom ended in 2006, when a bagel throw drew a delay of game penalty, Plattsburgh scored on the power play to win, and the Lakers lost their national tournament berth. The next year the men's team won the 2007 NCAA Division III tournament, the school's first NCAA championship.
  • Named for Dr. Mary WalkerThe campus health center honors Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who was born in Oswego and worked as an assistant surgeon during the Civil War. For her service she received the Medal of Honor in 1865, and she remains the only woman ever awarded it.
