About Sutton, Vermont
The Vermont Legislature chartered the town on February 26, 1782, as Billymead. It was named for William, the younger son of Jonathan Arnold of Rhode Island. By 1810, residents were tired of Billy and his bullying and drinking. At town meeting they voted by a wide margin to rename it Sutton.
