About Syracuse, Utah
Syracuse is a city of 32,141 people in Davis County, near the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. White settlers had lived here since the mid-1800s, and one of them, William Galbraith, made salt from the lake and printed the word Syracuse on his bags. He borrowed the name from a New York salt company he had heard of, based in Syracuse, a city famous for its salt in the 19th century, and the name stayed with the place.
The community had no local government of its own until 1935, when residents formed the Syracuse Town Board. Its application to become a town went in on September 3, 1935, and the state recorded it on October 14. Fifteen years later, on August 21, 1950, the board voted to make Syracuse a third-class city, and Governor J. Bracken Lee signed the proclamation approving it on September 13, 1950.
- Gateway to Antelope IslandSyracuse is known as the "Gateway to Antelope Island." A causeway that begins at Antelope Drive, State Route 127, carries visitors across the Great Salt Lake to Antelope Island State Park.
- A city that kept growingSyracuse has grown quickly since the 1990s. Its population climbed 158.9% between the 2000 and 2010 censuses to reach 24,331, and by 2020 the count stood at 32,141.
