About Layton, Utah
Layton is a city of 81,773 people in Davis County, on the Wasatch Front between Salt Lake City and Ogden. Settlers spread north from Kaysville in the 1850s, and the place took the name of Christopher Layton, a Latter-day Saint leader who settled here. By 1886 it had its own precinct and its own post office.
When Kaysville became a city in 1868, its limits took in Layton, and by the 1880s many Layton landowners wanted out. They said Kaysville had no right to tax their land because the city gave them no services. The fight went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which sided with the Layton owners in 1894 in Linford v. Ellison. Layton broke away in 1902 and became an incorporated town in 1920.
- A wartime boomLayton stayed a farm town of about 600 people until 1940, when Hill Air Force Base opened just to the north. Workers poured in during World War II, and the 1950 census counted 3,456. The town became a city of homes, and in 1985 it passed Bountiful as the largest city in Davis County.
- Utah's 22nd templeOn April 1, 2018, Russell M. Nelson, then leading the Latter-day Saint church, announced plans for the Layton Utah Temple. Building was finished in June 2024, and the temple was dedicated on June 16, 2024.
