About Talmage, Kansas
Talmage is a community of 78 people in Dickinson County, Kansas, set in the valley of Mud Creek. The town grew up with the railroad. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe built a branch line through Talmage in 1887, linking Neva, which lay three miles west of Strong City, with Superior, Nebraska. A post office opened here on December 22, 1887, the same year the line arrived.
- Still the Santa FeThe railroad that brought Talmage to life in 1887 kept the Santa Fe name for more than a century. In 1996 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the BNSF Railway, but most people in Talmage still call the line the Santa Fe.
- Willow Dale township, 1912A 1912 Kansas encyclopedia described Talmage as a little town in Willow Dale township, on Mud Creek and the Santa Fe line, 7 miles northwest of Abilene, the county seat. Today the drive to Abilene on highways K-18 and K-15 runs 11 miles to the southeast.
