About Tavernier, Florida
Tavernier is a community of 2,530 people in Monroe County, at the southwestern end of Key Largo in the upper Florida Keys. Every one of its first settlers came from the Bahamas, and in the late 1800s they built a small oceanfront settlement called Planter, northeast of the present town center, which grew up around Samuel Johnson's farm. By 1895 Robert Albury and Amos Lowe, the town's founders, had homesteaded what remained of the oceanfront.
Planter did not last. Hurricanes struck, a blight hit the pineapple crop, and new building moved toward the railroad when it came through. The Planter post office shut in 1910, and in 1911 a post office named Tavernier opened beside the railroad depot.
- Charted as Key TabonaIn 1774 the British mapmaker Bernard Romans drew a detailed chart of the Keys and labeled this spot Key Tabona. Sailors prized it because it lay close to the hazardous Carysfort Reef and offered a sheltered anchorage, so Bahamian fishermen and wreckers made it a regular stop.
- Hubert McKenzie arrives in 1928Hubert S. McKenzie settled in Tavernier in 1928 and, little by little, opened businesses that gave the town services, supplies and steady work. When the state raised its historical marker at mile marker 91.5 on U.S. 1 in 2013, many of those businesses were still running, and descendants of the founding families still lived here.
- Key Largo's last 3 milesTavernier takes up the southwesternmost 3 miles of Key Largo, the largest island in the Keys. Tavernier Creek divides it from Islamorada on Plantation Key, and the Overseas Highway carries travelers 90 miles southwest to Key West or 64 miles northeast to Miami.
