About Temple, Texas

Temple is a city of 82,073 people in northeastern Bell County, Central Texas. Jonathan E. Moore owned the land, and in 1880 he sold 187 acres of it to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, which set up a construction camp there and named it Temple Junction after Bernard Moore Temple, its chief engineer. Locals had their own names for the place: Mud Town, or Tanglefoot.

A post office opened in January 1881, and with it the official name became Temple. The railroad sold town lots that June, and since railroad workers already lived on the site, stores sprang up fast. Temple was incorporated in 1882. That same year the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway laid its tracks through town, and the Santa Fe line soon made Temple a division point.

  • Why they called it TanglefootEarly Temple was a camp of shacks and tents, full of saloons and the rough characters of the early West. Between the muddy streets and the liquor, some residents had real trouble walking across town, and the nickname Tanglefoot came from that.
  • A medical center since 1891The railroad's Santa Fe Hospital opened in Temple in 1891, King's Daughters Hospital followed in 1897, and Scott and White Hospital opened in 1904. With all three, Temple grew into one of the Southwest's foremost places for medical care. The Santa Fe and Scott and White hospitals merged in 1983 and became today's Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, the area's largest employer.
  • The biggest Harvey House in TexasThe Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway bought the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe in 1886. Its Temple depot held the largest Harvey House restaurant in Texas, where uniformed Harvey Girls served train passengers and townspeople alike, and the company ran a dairy and vegetable farm near town to supply it. The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum, upstairs in the depot at 315 West Avenue B, keeps a large collection of Harvey House memorabilia.
  • The Temple Stag PartyIn 1893 a private Thanksgiving gathering of some of Temple's leading men grew into an annual event called the Temple Stag Party. The town held it every year until 1923.
  • Temple College, 1926Temple College opened in 1926 as the first college in the city. It still offers two-year associate degrees, with strong programs in nursing, business administration and information technology.
