About The Hammocks, Florida
The Hammocks is a planned community of 59,480 people in Miami-Dade County, about 18 miles southwest of downtown Miami and 6 miles west of Kendall. The census found 51,003 residents here in 2010, so the community kept growing quickly over the next decade.
Before any houses went up, this ground was thick forest. Most of its trees were tropical, though a few came from cooler, temperate climates. Developers replaced those woods with a master planned community meant to hold about 8,300 homes, mixing single-family houses with condominiums and rental complexes.
- Planned for 8,300 homesThe Hammocks was built as one large plan, with several developments of more than a hundred units each. The biggest single-family project, Garden Hills, has 655 homes. Condominiums and rental communities were scattered among the houses.
- Alienware's headquartersAlienware has its headquarters in The Hammocks. The Miami-Dade Police Department also runs its Hammocks District Station in the community.
- Schools close to homeChildren here attend Hammocks Middle School and Felix Varela High School, part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Families can also choose Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School or Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School, which opened in 1997.
