About The Meadows, Florida
The Meadows is a community of 5,037 people in northern Sarasota County, up from 3,994 in 2010. It grew out of a land deal made by Frank Taylor, who had founded the British construction company Taylor Woodrow.
Someone suggested that Taylor look at a 1,650-acre parcel north of Sarasota, and once he saw the land he fell in love with it. His company bought the property in 1973 and 1974. Over the next 20 years it built villas, condos, townhouses and single-family houses there, and those homes became The Meadows.
- The old Newburn RanchBefore it was The Meadows, this property in northwest Sarasota County was the Newburn Ranch, and Frank Taylor played a central part in acquiring it. Sarasota County gave its approval to the new development in November 1974.
- A street named for the builderFrank Taylor named his firm for himself and for his uncle, Jack Woodrow, who lent his surname but never helped run the business. The company's name was later shortened to Taywood, and a street in the community, Taywood Meadows, carries it.
- First home sold in 1977The first house to sell in The Meadows stood in Woodmans Chart. Bill and Doris Eiseman bought it in February 1977, a little more than two years after the county approved the plan.
