About Kensington Park, Florida
Kensington Park is a community of 3,697 people in Sarasota County, about three miles northeast of downtown Sarasota. Its story began in 1949, when Martin Paver, a New Yorker, visited Sarasota with his wife and liked it so much that he moved there to develop real estate, bringing his two sons into the business. After building Paver Park Estates, the Paver Construction Company bought more than 400 acres in 1955 from Charles Schmid, who ran a dairy farm in the area.
Construction started in 1956, and the finished subdivision held 1,400 homes. The Pavers named it after the part of Great Neck, New York, where they had lived. Across Lockwood Ridge Road lay Glen Oaks, where the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus spent its winters in those years.
- Its own water in 1958The Pavers set up the utilities so the subdivision ran them and every property owner held a share. Each home purchase helped pay to install and maintain the system. In 1958 Kensington Park opened its own sewer and water service, charging less than the City of Sarasota did.
- Praised by Good HousekeepingThe Paver company's motto was to build better than the building codes demanded. In 1962 Good Housekeeping magazine honored Kensington Park with a citation for its architecture, its land development and its house plans.
- Aquabelles and luausBy 1960 residents had a 14 acre Swim & Country Club. It offered an Olympic pool, courts for tennis and shuffleboard, gardens and spots for picnics, and its 8,400 square foot clubhouse held an auditorium with a stage. The Aquabelles, a women's synchronized swim team, performed in the pool, and the community luau was the favorite event of the year.
- Handed to the YMCABy 1969 only 20% of households paid the $100 yearly dues, and the club was losing money. A majority of residents backed a bill for a $50 yearly fee on every household so all could use it, but the Sarasota County Commission turned it down. Two months later the neighborhood gave the club to the YMCA at no cost, and it became the Kensington Park YMCA.
