About The Plains, Ohio

The Plains is a community of 3,140 people in Athens County. Its name first belonged to the open country where the Mound Builders lived and raised their earthen mounds, long before any town stood here. A post office called The Plains opened in 1908, and it has stayed open ever since.

Coal shaped the town in the early 1900s. The Hocking Valley Coal Company dug its Eclipse Mine No. 4 here and built a company town right on top of it. Miners and their families did not own their homes; they rented them from the coal company and shopped at the company store.

  • The Eclipse company storeAccording to Jonathon Sowash, a co-owner of the Eclipse Company Town, this was the last company town in Ohio with its company store still standing. Eclipse, Ltd. renovated the store, and it now hosts weddings, parties and community events. Twelve company houses and one shotgun house survive beside it, and the refurbished town is on the National Register as the Hocking Valley Coal Company Town Historic District.
  • Nearly 25 ancient moundsThe Plains is known for the burial mounds and ceremonial circles that Native Americans built here. Archaeologists have identified nearly 25 mounds, and together they are called the Wolf Plains Mound Group. To keep new construction from destroying them, the Archaeological Conservancy has been buying the land beneath the mounds.
  • Joe Burrow's hometownJoe Burrow was nine years old when his family settled in The Plains. He grew up here, played at Athens High School and went on to play football for the Cincinnati Bengals.
