About Thorndale, Pennsylvania

Thorndale is a community of 3,669 people in Caln Township, Chester County, and it is the township's commercial and administrative center. Its main street is U.S. Route 30 Business. The village took shape around iron. After the firm of Yearsley & Forsythe broke up in 1846, the Forsythe family formed J. & J. Forsythe & Sons. In 1847 the new firm bought a 20-acre tract here and put up the rolling mills that became the Thorndale Iron Works.

  • A mill and 16 housesThe Forsythes started the Thorndale Iron Works in 1847 with one mill and 16 homes for its workers. James Forsythe ran the mill as superintendent. He had learned the trade at the Triadelphia Iron Works in Coatesville, where he had worked since 1838. That same year William Forsythe married and settled on a farm at Thorndale, and the iron works later bought part of that farm.
  • Plate iron for ships and enginesBy 1880 the Thorndale Iron Works was rolling plate iron that went into ships and bridges, along with tanks, boilers and locomotives. Between 80 and 90 men worked there.
  • President Buchanan's summer houseJames Buchanan, President of the United States, kept a summer house in Thorndale. The house still stands. It is now a restaurant and part of a golf course.
  • The end of the lineSEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line carries the town's name, and Thorndale is the last station stop on that line. The SEPTA Route 135 bus serves the town too.
