About Tice, Florida
Tice is a community of 4,853 people in Lee County, Florida, with the Caloosahatchee River along its northern edge and the city of Fort Myers on its south and west sides. Growers first settled the area in the late 1800s to raise citrus, but it stayed small until the Florida land boom of the 1920s brought new building.
In the early 1900s, Chauncey O. Tice teamed up with his uncle, W. W. Tice, a former chief justice of Kentucky then living in Fort Myers, to plant a grove. The pair bought land between the Atlantic Coast Line railroad and the river, about three miles east of Fort Myers, and Chauncey later bought out his uncle's share.
- A station named TICEChauncey Tice put up a packinghouse of his own on the grove land. One day he found a sign reading TICE nailed to it by railroad men, who wanted to use his building as a station. When the railroad later built a new station close by, the new depot kept the same name.
- Largest school in Lee CountyThe Lee County School Board ran a big school building campaign in the 1920s, and under its 1926 bond issue it chose architect W. O. Sparklin to design a school for Tice. Work started in the spring of 1927 and finished that August, in time for the new term. Tice Grammar School, built in the Mediterranean Revival style, was the largest school in the county, the first there with a steel frame and the only one with a full basement.
