About Tilden, Texas
Tilden is the county seat of McMullen County, a community of 190 people about 70 miles south of San Antonio. Settlers founded it in 1858 where Leoncita Creek empties into the Frio River, making it one of the county's first two settlements. During the Civil War a Home Guard post called Camp Rio Frio went up to defend it against Apaches and bandits.
After the war the place went by Dog Town and had a name for lawlessness and outlaws. It got a post office in 1871. When McMullen County was organized in 1877, Dog Town became the county seat, and that year the site was surveyed and renamed Tilden, most likely for Samuel J. Tilden, the Democrat who lost the 1876 presidential race. A ferry over the Frio opened in 1879, and about 1880 stagecoaches on the San Antonio-Laredo road began stopping here on a regular schedule.
- Boot Hill CemeteryMany of the people buried at Boot Hill died violently, "with their boots on," in accidents or murders, and others died in a cholera epidemic in 1869. In 1877 the town gave it up for the new Hill Top Cemetery, and over more than half a century many markers fell and were lost.
- Boot Hill restored in 1955In 1955 the newly formed Cenizo Garden Club took on the old Boot Hill Cemetery. Members cleared the brush, cleaned the plots, found as many graves as they could and ringed the grounds with native stone. They added a big masonry boot set on a slab of petrified palm stump as a sign, and the club won the historical marker that stands at the entrance.
- A Baptist college in 1881Old McMullin College opened in Tilden in 1881, led by John Van Epps Covey and backed by the Baptist Church. In 1897 its buildings passed to the Tilden School District.
- The Franklin Ranch, 1868Ralph S. Franklin built the Franklin Ranch in 1868, the community's first establishment. Today it is the Lone Star Camp, a hunting and working ranch camp that the Franklin family still owns.
