About Tivoli, Texas

Tivoli is a community of 419 people in northeastern Refugio County, where State Highways 35 and 239 cross close to the mouth of the Guadalupe River. Preston R. Austin, a rancher and businessman, founded the town in 1907 and named it for his Tivoli Ranch. The town grew quickly, and by 1914 it had its own bank, stores and hotel.

  • A name from ItalyThe town carries the name of Preston R. Austin's Tivoli Ranch. Wikipedia traces the name back further, to Tivoli, an old Italian town in Lazio, a region in the center of Italy.
  • About 400 people by 1914Seven years after Austin founded it, Tivoli had an estimated 400 residents. They had a hotel, a bank and a drugstore, two general stores, a blacksmith and telephone service.
  • Home of the RedfishStudents from Tivoli attend the Austwell-Tivoli Independent School District, whose school teams are the Redfish. The Austwell-Tivoli school recently grew, adding a full new section to its building.
