About the City of Tomahawk, Wisconsin
Tomahawk is a city of 3,441 people in Lincoln County, where the Wisconsin River turns a sharp bend. The land belonged to the Ojibwe until the cession of 1837, and Ojibwe villages stood just north of today's city, near present-day Bradley, and on Skanawan Creek. Loggers began working up the Tomahawk River about 1860, and by 1880 several families lived near where it meets the Wisconsin, a spot called Bouchard's Station or The Forks.
In 1886 the Tomahawk Land and Boom Company, led by William H. Bradley, set up construction camps for a dam and a railroad, and the town dates its founding from those camps. The railroad owned 51 percent of the company, and Bradley's Land, Log and Lumber Company held the other 49. Surveyors laid out the townsite in 1887, and that summer agent Henry Payne sold its lots to buyers in Milwaukee. That October, Angus Buie built the first log building. Tomahawk was incorporated in 1891, and Buie went on to serve as its first mayor.
- Lake MohawksinWhen the Tomahawk Land and Boom Company finished its dam, it ranked among the largest in the world, a huge investment for its time. The dammed river forms Lake Mohawksin, whose name joins the final syllables of the three rivers that feed it: the Somo, the Tomahawk and the Wisconsin.
- First car, first planeIn 1906 William T. Bradley, the founder's adopted son and a future mayor, drove the first automobile into Tomahawk. Eight years later, in 1914, the first airplane to visit came down on north Tomahawk Avenue, because the town had no runway yet.
- The Mitchell Hotel fireIn 1929 the Mitchell Hotel, a Tomahawk landmark, burned to the ground, and the flames came close to destroying the whole downtown. A new pump borrowed from the Phillips fire department stopped the fire and saved the business district.
- FrenchtownA neighborhood in the south part of the city is known as Frenchtown, though no one is sure how it got the name. Many of Tomahawk's first settlers spoke French, coming from Canada and other parts of the United States, among them Germain Bourchard and early property owners Albert King and Gilbert Vallier.
