About Tonganoxie, Kansas

Tonganoxie is a city of 5,573 people in Leavenworth County, on the old road that ran between Leavenworth and Lawrence. It takes its name from a Delaware chief who lived a short distance from the present town. According to Wikipedia, his name means "shorty" in the Delaware language.

Wilson H. Fox was the first settler on the village site, where he built a log cabin. James English moved here in 1862, became the first postmaster and sold the land that became the town site to Mrs. Magdalena Berry. She platted her forty acres in 1866, the same year William Dane opened the first regular store, and Tonganoxie was incorporated as a city in 1871.

  • The chief's house on the trailIn 1855 and the two years that followed, white travelers going to and from Lawrence made Chief Tonganoxie's house a regular stop. His log cabin later burned, but the two-story frame house the government built for him was still standing when the county history was written, and Quincy Baldwin owned and lived in it.
  • Three doctors and no lawyersThe county history called Tonganoxie the largest village in Leavenworth County. Its 300 people had five general stores, three boot and shoe shops, three blacksmith shops, a drug store, a butcher, a bakery, a milliner and a jeweler. Three doctors practiced in town, a printer put out a small paper called the Mirror, and not one lawyer lived there.
  • A brick church and schoolMethodist Episcopal, Baptist and Congregationalist societies all met in Tonganoxie. The Methodists, led by Rev. J. C. Telford, owned a brick church worth $2,000, and the district school was a solid two-story brick building where about 100 pupils attended.
  • A water-powered flour millMrs. E. Davis & Son ran a water-powered flouring mill four miles southeast of town. Its owners had $10,000 invested in it, and it turned out about $20,000 worth of flour a year for the farm families around Tonganoxie.
  • The plant residents turned awayTyson Foods had picked Tonganoxie as the site for a chicken processing plant that would have cost $320,000,000. Local residents spoke out against the project, and in September 2017 the company cancelled its plans.
