About Williamstown, Kansas

Williamstown is a census-designated place of 96 people in southeastern Jefferson County, in the Kansas River valley. White Plume, a Kaw chief from the band called the Half-breeds, received a stone house that the U.S. government put up for him here in 1825, and in 1827 this land, Kaw Half-Breed Tract #23, became home to the Kaw Agency. The house was falling apart by 1865, but the creek named for it still offered good ground for settlers.

That year Mapes, Williams & Moore, who had bought 900 acres nearby from the railroad company, laid out Williamstown on the banks of Stone House Creek, close to the Kansas Pacific Railway. Samuel Mitchell opened the first store in 1865, and a sawmill went up south of the tracks. The town grew slowly, because railroad officials founded the rival town of Perry three miles to the west.

  • The tornado of 1893Around 7 pm on June 21, 1893, a tornado tore southeast through Williamstown, cutting a path half a mile wide and six miles long. At least 15 people died, and the storm even toppled headstones in Underwood Cemetery. Doctors gathered at Perry cared for the injured, while people from Perry and Lawrence searched through that night and the next day. On the following Sunday the Union Pacific ran special trains so visitors could see the damage.
  • Floods in 1903 and 1951On May 31, 1903, the flooding Kansas River reached Williamstown, and people said the water spread from bluff to bluff across the valley. There were no telephones in the area to carry a warning, so many families lost livestock and property. The Great Flood of 1951 did even more damage to property here.
  • From schoolhouse to churchWilliamstown Elementary closed in 2009, and children from town now attend schools in Perry and Lecompton. The old school building found a new use as the Williamstown Assembly of God.
