About Travelers Rest, South Carolina

Travelers Rest is a city of 7,788 people in Greenville County, 10 miles north of Greenville and about 20 miles south of the North Carolina line. In 1794 the South Carolina General Assembly set aside $2,000 for a wagon road running north from Greenville over the Blue Ridge, by way of Asheville, to East Tennessee. Once the road was finished in the mid-1850s, it filled with wagons, and for people heading north from the coast this was the first well-supplied stop before a climb of several thousand feet into the mountains.

Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, before it was a city, most of this area went by the name Bates Township. Travelers Rest was first incorporated in 1891, but that charter expired, and the town did not incorporate again until 1959, when it became the city it is today.

  • A post office in 1808Travelers Rest got its post office in 1808, serving a community made up mostly of farms. Stagecoaches running between Asheville, North Carolina, and Greenville carried the mail in and out.
  • Still the road northU.S. Route 276 comes up from downtown Greenville and becomes Main Street, then heads northwest past Caesar's Head State Park into North Carolina and on to Brevard. U.S. Route 25 turns north into the Blue Ridge toward Asheville, about 54 miles away, much as the 1794 wagon road did.
  • Furman joined in 2018Furman University, a private liberal arts school just south of the old town center, became part of Travelers Rest when the city annexed its campus in 2018. The university still keeps Greenville as its mailing address.
