About Traver, California
The town took its name from Charles Traver, a Sacramento capitalist with a stake in the 76 canal. It owed its origin entirely to that canal. It was the only place on the Southern Pacific line not first owned by the railroad. Lot sales on April 8, 1884, totaled 65,000 dollars.
In the early 1880s, stock raisers Darwin and Ferguson owned large tracts along Kings River near Traver. The area took the name of their brand, 76. In 1881 P. Y. Baker and D. K. Zumwalt organized the 76 Land and Water Company. A main canal one hundred feet wide at the bottom was built to bring water onto the land.
- How fast the new town grewTraver's town site was surveyed in March 1884. When lots went on sale that April, its only building was a store moved in from Cross Creek, a small nearby station. By May 1 the town had two hotels, two lumber yards, a post office and a railroad depot.
