About Goshen, California
Goshen is a community in Tulare County, a few miles west of Visalia. Until the twentieth century, the land under the town sat on an island in a marsh beside Tulare Lake, which was once the biggest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes before it was drained.
The town's story begins in May 1872, when the railroad was completed to this spot. A depot for passengers and freight went up, buyers snapped up large numbers of lots, and many expected Goshen to grow into an important city within a few years. The 2010 census counted 3,006 people here, and by 2020 the number had climbed to 4,968.
- A name from GenesisAn employee of the Southern Pacific named the place when the tracks arrived in 1872. In the Bible, Goshen was the finest land in Egypt, the country Pharaoh handed to Jacob, and towns across the country have long borrowed the name.
- A stagecoach stop in 1858Before the railroad, the Butterfield Overland Mail came through in 1858 and stopped at Head of Cross Creek Station, 4 miles northwest of today's Goshen. The station stood where Cross Creek split into two branches, so travelers could ford each smaller stream on its own. The next stops were Visalia, 12 miles east, and Whitmore's Ferry, 15 miles northwest.
- Railroad center of the valleyIn 1874 a branch line was built from Goshen to Visalia. The big city its early lot buyers hoped for never came, but by the 1913 county history Goshen had become the railroad center of Tulare County and of the whole San Joaquin Valley.
- Evans and SontagIn the early 1890s, the outlaws Chris Evans and John Sontag stopped a Southern Pacific train at Goshen and robbed it.
