About Trenton, Tennessee

Trenton is a city of 4,240 people and the county seat of Gibson County. Before there was a town, Thomas Gibson ran a trading post on this ground called Gibson-Port. His brother, Colonel John Gibson, gave his name to the new county, and in 1824 Trenton was established on the site to serve as its seat of government.

The town took its name from Trenton, New Jersey. As the county seat, Trenton has long been home to the Gibson County Courthouse, which joined the National Register in 1976.

“Trenton, the county seat, is the home of the world's largest collection of Veilleuse-Theieres.”

  • 525 teapots, no two alikeIn 1955 Dr. Frederick C. Freed gave Trenton his collection of rare antique porcelain veilleuses. Each pot sat above a candle whose glow lit up its outside, so it worked as a night light too. Not one of the 525 matches another, and some are shaped like palaces or people. Every spring since 1981, the town has held a Teapot Festival in their honor.
  • A 31 mph speed limitIn the 1950s the city chose an odd number for its speed limit, 31 miles per hour, and signs all over town post it.
  • Peabody High School, 1877Peabody High School was founded in 1877, and its building joined the National Register in 1984. Nite Lite Theatre, a volunteer community theatre started in 1980, stages most of its shows there, from The Sound of Music to You Can't Take It with You. A Jackson State Community College campus sits next door.
  • Minor league ball in 1922The Trenton Reds played in 1922 in the Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee League, known as the KITTY League. The next year Trenton shared a team with nearby Milan, called the Milan-Trenton Twins.
