About Tuolumne City, California

The Franklin Summers family settled here in 1854, the first non-Native settlers in the area. In 1858 James Blakely found the first quartz lode nearby and named it Eureka. That mine grew into the town of Summersville. The town was later called Carters and finally Tuolumne.

Glen Bell opened a tourist railroad in town in the late 1970s. He had founded the Taco Bell restaurant chain. The train ran about five miles from the old lumber mill into the mountains, on track left by the logging company. The ride closed in the mid-1980s.
