About East Sonora, California

East Sonora is a census-designated place of 2,431 people in Tuolumne County, up from 2,266 in 2010. Its schooling goes back to May 16, 1865, when the county Board of Supervisors ordered the Curtis Creek School District formed, and about 25 pupils enrolled in the new district.

  • A $130 schoolhouseThe district's first classes met in a small temporary house that cost about $130 to build. It sat on a little flat beside Sullivan Creek, on the stream's east side, at the spot where travelers on the old Cherokee Camp road forded the water, roughly 300 yards upstream from where Highway 108 now spans the creek.
  • Land from a rancherThe school later moved two miles east, onto land that ranch owner Riley Alexander Gilkey donated to the district.
  • Lunch at school after 1940After 1940 Curtis Creek School began serving lunches to its pupils, and that program was the first school lunch program anywhere in Tuolumne County.
