About Unionville, New York
Unionville stood on land that both New York and New Jersey claimed. When the dispute was settled, the village had only two or three houses. The final state line ran so close that the place took the name Unionville. The name honored the two states uniting again as friends.
By local tradition, the name Unionville came into use around 1820, after a land dispute was settled. A local railroad once carried milk and high school students. Better roads and a new high school away from the tracks ended those runs by World War II. Passenger trains stopped in 1968.
- The railroad came to the villageThe Middletown, Unionville and Watergap Railroad reached the village on June 2, 1868. The new line changed how mail moved through the area. After it opened, Unionville got a daily mail.
