About University of California-Santa Barbara, California

University of California-Santa Barbara is a community of 9,710 people in Santa Barbara County, built around the university campus on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. The school began in 1891 as the Anna Blake School, which taught home economics and industrial arts. The state took it over in 1909 and made it the Santa Barbara State Normal School, and in 1921 it became Santa Barbara State College.

In 1944 a group of Santa Barbara leaders, headed by News-Press publisher Thomas M. Storke and Pearl Chase, lobbied the Legislature, Gov. Earl Warren and the University of California regents until the college joined the UC system. The regents' first site was 100 acres of mostly unusable land on a mesa by the sea. Then a 400-acre piece of the old Marine Corps Air Station Santa Barbara in Goleta came open, once the Bishop Den Ranch of Rancho Los Dos Pueblos. The War Assets Administration let the college have it at no cost because it would serve education, and the campus moved there in 1949.

  • A full campus in 1958The regents first pictured a small liberal arts school of 3000 to 3500 students, a "Williams College of the West." The baby boom after World War II changed those plans, and in 1958 Santa Barbara College became a general campus named the University of California, Santa Barbara. The industrial arts program that had made the state college famous was dropped, and Samuel B. Gould took office as chancellor in 1959.
  • One of ARPANET's first fourUC Santa Barbara was among the first four sites on ARPANET, linked with the University of Utah, Stanford and UCLA. Over the following decade more computers across the country joined the network, and its technology grew into the internet.
  • Aldous Huxley in 1959Professor Douwe Stuurman brought the English writer Aldous Huxley to campus in 1959 as the university's first visiting professor. Huxley gave a series of lectures he called "The Human Situation."
  • Malcolm X Hall, 1968In 1968 twelve Black students took over North Hall and renamed it Malcolm X Hall for a time. They wanted Chancellor Vernon Cheadle and the administration to recognize the needs of Black students who felt pushed to the margins. The university met their demands by creating a Department of Black Studies.
  • Storke Tower, 1969Storke Tower was finished in 1969 above Storke Plaza, and no steel and cement structure in Santa Barbara County stands taller. It holds a carillon of 61 bells spanning five octaves, and the campus radio station KCSB 91.9 and the Daily Nexus newspaper work from offices at its base.
