About Upland, Indiana

Upland is a town of 3,821 people in Jefferson Township, Grant County. In the 1830s a speculator named John Oswalt bought most of the land the town now covers, because he expected that a canal linking Indianapolis and Fort Wayne might run through it. Jacob Bugher arrived in 1851, taught school for a time, and in 1857 settled on the ground where Upland would grow.

In the late 1860s Bugher founded the town as a depot stop on the Indiana Central Railroad. People believed the spot was the highest point on the line between Columbus and Chicago, and the name Upland came from that belief. By 1880 about 150 people lived here, with a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, two churches, a school and several stores.

  • Gas struck in 1888Central Indiana's gas boom began in 1886, and two years later gas was found at Upland. The new fuel let the town grow fast. By the 1890s it had passed 1,000 people and had a glass factory, streetlights, and pipes carrying water and gas to homes. The boom lasted until around 1900, when the gas supply started to fall off.
  • Taylor University since 1893Taylor University was short of money in Fort Wayne when the gas boom made Upland prosperous. The town used that wealth to offer the school $10,000 in cash and 10 acres of land, and Taylor moved here in the summer of 1893. The Christian college has been part of Upland ever since.
  • Two early congregationsThe Friends' Church at Upland was set up about 1873, a few years after the town began. The Methodist Episcopal Church followed with its own building in 1885.
