About Gas City, Indiana

Gas City is a city of 6,157 people in Grant County, on the Mississinewa River. Noah Harris settled here on May 25, 1867, and for its first two decades the place was known as Harrisburg. In 1887 natural gas was discovered in the area during the Indiana gas boom, and the small settlement grew into a boom town.

Investors organized the Gas City Land Company on March 21, 1892, and within a few days the town of about 150 residents had traded the name Harrisburg for Gas City. The boom did not last. Wasteful drilling and pumping used up much of the gas, and most of the supply was gone by the late 1800s and early 1900s.

  • First industry in 1892The Thompson Bottle Company opened its factory in 1892, the same year the town took its new name, and it became Gas City's first industry. John L. Thompson served as the company's president.
  • The Ducktail RunEach fall the city holds a rod and custom car show that locals simply call the Ducktail Run. Only cars built in 1972 or earlier can enter. In 2020 the show drew 2,020 registered vehicles, a count that matched the year.
