About Utica, Winnebago County, Wisconsin

Utica is a town of 1,364 people in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and it takes in the small communities of Elo, Fisk and Pickett. In February 1846 Erwin Heath, who later became postmaster of Oshkosh, picked out a claim here and built a log house. The land then belonged to the Town of Rushford, and other pioneers soon followed. Hiram McKee, J. M. Little and E. B. Fish were among them, along with Lucius Hawley, D. H. Nash and Armine Pickett.

Within two years settlers had claimed almost the entire township, and on March 11, 1848, it became a separate town called Utica. Voters held their first town meeting at Lucius Hawley's house, where they chose D. H. Nash to chair the board of supervisors and Ely N. Hyde to serve as town clerk. In 1856 the town's name was changed to Welaunee, though it carries the Utica name again today.

“with the doctrines of '76 declared as their political creed, an oration delivered by Rev. H. McKee, and the prairie christened with the imposing name of 'Liberty.'”
Wikipedia
  • Liberty Prairie, 1846The first settlement grew up on a prairie in the middle of the township. Many of its pioneers backed the new Liberty Party, so when they gathered in a grove to mark their first Fourth of July in 1846, they gave the prairie the party's name.
  • Hiram McKee, first preacherHiram McKee, one of the earliest settlers, was a Wesleyan Methodist. He became the town's first clergyman and led its first religious meeting, and he gave the speech at that first Fourth of July celebration on Liberty Prairie.
  • Two post offices by 1856By 1856 the town had two post offices. One was called Welaunee, also spelled Weelaunee, and the community around it is now Pickett. The other was Fisks Corners, known today as Fisk.
