About Vale, South Dakota

Vale is a community of 130 people in Butte County, in the western part of South Dakota. Pioneers settled this eastern corner of the county, and Vale got its own post office in 1883. The railroad reached the town later, and a major irrigation project in 1909 brought water to the surrounding farmland. With that water, Vale grew into a busy farming town.

  • Named for its valleyThe town took the name Vale because its town site lies in a valley.
  • A first for western South DakotaNo other rural part of western South Dakota had a high school before the Vale School opened. It was important to education in the region and to the life of the town. Its mascot was the Beet Diggers. The school closed in 1982.
  • A biker bar near Bear ButteThe Full Throttle Saloon, called the world's largest biker bar and once the subject of its own reality television series, left nearby Sturgis and was rebuilt in Vale. It now sits on 600 acres near Bear Butte.
