About Valley Green, Pennsylvania
Valley Green is a census-designated place of 3,412 people in Newberry Township, York County. Its oldest settlement is the village of Yocumtown, built on high ground that looks out to the north and east over the Fishing Creek Valley. Quaker settlers had already come to that valley by 1732, long before anyone put up a house on the hill above it.
- Named for Elijah YocumThomas Mills built the first house on the village site in 1814. Around 1816 Elijah Yocum settled here, and the growing village took his name, Yocumtown.
- A full company in 1864In the summer of 1864 the 192d Pennsylvania Regiment was being organized at Harrisburg for one year of service. The Reverend S. S. Richmond, a clergyman, raised 200 men at Yocumtown, enough for a full company, and marched them to Harrisburg. The company joined the regiment at Harper's Ferry, with Richmond as its captain, and he also served as the regiment's chaplain.
