About Vanderwagen, New Mexico
Vanderwagen is a small community of 48 people in McKinley County. It sits on State Road 602, 17.5 miles south of Gallup. In the early 1940s the Keeley family owned the White Water Trading Post here. They hoped to start a town called White Water. But a town in southern New Mexico already had that name, so their plan for the name failed. The place is known today as Vanderwagen.
- Drained by Nelson WashNelson Wash flows west through Vanderwagen. It feeds Whitewater Arroyo, which keeps going west. The arroyo joins the Puerco River near Allentown, Arizona.
- David Skeet Elementary SchoolVanderwagen has its own grade school, David Skeet Elementary. It is part of Gallup-McKinley County Schools. Older students go on to Gallup Middle School and then Hiroshi Miyamura High School.
