About Verona, Missouri

Verona was platted in 1868 as a shipping point on the railroad. Seven years later, the first Waldensian colonists settled nearby. Their colony numbered about 40 families. A man named Solomon led them from Piedmont, Italy, to South America, and then to the United States.

Samuel Munday came from Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1848. Soon after, he ran the first water mill near Verona. It stood on or near the site of the Old Red Mill. At different times he owned or managed all the water mills from Verona to Hoberg. Some burned during the Civil War and were never rebuilt.
