About Aurora, Missouri
Aurora is a city in Lawrence County, Missouri, laid out in 1870. Galena discovered in 1885 began its mining era, followed by deeper extraction of zinc and galena. Its past also includes Frisco and Missouri Pacific depots and the 1914 Lewis Shaw Coleman House, which joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
- Founding in 1870Stephen G. Elliott platted Aurora in 1870, and a Missouri place-name account identifies May 9 as the layout date.
- Mining BeginsA November 1885 well excavation on Thomas D. Liles's farm uncovered galena, beginning Aurora's mining era.
- Zinc ProductionBy 1893, Aurora's mines had produced and shipped 12,651 tons of zinc ore.
- Historic Coleman HouseBuilt in 1914, the Lewis Shaw Coleman House became Lawrence County's first private residence on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Railroad ConnectionsAurora once had Frisco and Missouri Pacific depots, and the Missouri Pacific White River division's train master remained based there until the mid-1950s.
