About Village Green-Green Ridge, Pennsylvania

Village Green-Green Ridge is a community of about 8,000 people in the southern part of Aston Township, Delaware County. Pennsylvania Route 452, known locally as Pennell Road, runs through its center, and Chester lies 4 miles to the southeast by way of Concord Road. Its oldest landmark was the Seven Stars Hotel, which stood at the corner of Pennell and Concord roads.

In the 1840s, mill workers across Pennsylvania began arguing seriously for a shorter, ten-hour workday. They held their first general meeting in a hall at the Seven Stars, which John Garrett lent them for the purpose. There they formed a central committee made up of two workers from every mill in the county, and it met weekly until its job was finished. The campaign ended in victory, with a state law that set ten hours as a legal day of labor in mills making cotton, woolen, flax, paper and glass.

  • First licensed house, about 1738The Seven Stars Hotel was built about 1738 and became the first licensed house in Aston Township. Stagecoaches stopped there so drivers could water their horses or swap them for fresh ones, and for several years it was the only place in Aston where people could cast a vote.
  • Odd Fellows chartered in 1831A lodge of the Odd Fellows got its charter at the old hotel on September 2, 1831, years before the mill workers gathered in the same building to start their fight for a ten-hour day.
  • 8,279 people in 2000The community counted 8,279 people in 2000 and 7,822 in 2010, and the Census Bureau counted 8,000 here in 2020. It covers 1.9 square miles, all of it land, and its children attend schools in the Penn-Delco School District.
