About Vinings, Georgia

Vinings is a community of 12,581 people in Cobb County, set along the Chattahoochee River across from Buckhead. It was first called Crossroads, then Paces, after Hardy Pace, who ran a ferry over the river around 1830. Paces Ferry Road, which led to his crossing, remains the chief east to west route through Vinings.

In the 1840s the Western and Atlantic Railroad built its line from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Atlanta, and this spot became a construction station. The place ended up named, by accident, for William H. Vining, who worked on laying the tracks at Vining's Bridge. The state has owned the railroad from the start and now leases it to CSX.

  • Union troops in 1864The Union Army held Vinings during Sherman's Atlanta campaign in 1864 and the March to the Sea that followed. Pace's home served as a hospital for Union soldiers and was destroyed along the way.
  • Springs and pavilionsVinings came back after the war. Governor Brown leased the railroad to carry passengers out to springs and pavilions here, built to give people a break from the rebuilding of Atlanta.
  • A bridge in 1904In 1904 Vinings gained official standing as a community, and that same year a one-lane bridge was built over the Chattahoochee.
  • Never a cityVinings has never incorporated. After Sandy Springs became a city, residents held at least one public meeting on doing the same, but they were evenly split, and worries about higher property taxes shelved the idea. Some hoped the Georgia Township Act would let Vinings become a township with control over its own zoning, but as of 2013 the bill had not come back before the Georgia General Assembly.
